Manus Gigengack voetbalde op topniveau. Hij speelde ondermeer voor Geel-Wit in Haarlem, en was bovendien jarenlang een vaste waarde als international in het Nederlands elftal van de RK Federatie. Lou Gigengack was bij zijn geboorte aangegeven onder de naam Giegengack. Bij vonnis van de Arrondissements Rechtbank te Haarlem van 4 maart 1890 is de verbetering bevolen van de geboorteakte in die zin, dat daarin de naam Giegengack moet worden gelezen als Gigengack. <XXX>

The descendants of Aloysius Gigengack and Ettina Maria Vietor had a reunion in Haarlem on the 17th of May 1998 in restaurant Dreefzicht. The reunion was organized by Loek (A.P.M.) Gigengack. Many years earlier, on the 28th of May 1972, Loek Gigengack already organized a family reunion.

Het leven in en rond huize Nieuwe Groenmarkt 7 in 1936
Aloysius Lourentius Ferdinand Kroon, vernoemd naar zijn grootvader van moederskant, vertelt over het leven in en rond het huis van zijn opa en oma Gigengack aan de Nieuwe Groenmarkt in Haarlem.

“De Nieuwe Groenmarkt ligt in het centrum van Haarlem. Op nummer 7 woonden mijn grootouders Lou en Maria Gigengack. Hier tegenover was de Paterskerk met pastorie en kosterswoning. Ook was er het gebouw van de Vincentiusvereniging waar twee keer per week voor de ‘arme mensen’ warm eten werd gekookt, wat op verschillende plaatsen in de stad werd uitgedeeld. Op de hoek bij de Zijlstraat was een ‘kraantje’ met een drinkbak voor de paarden, een klein bakje voor de honden en een kroes aan een ketting voor de mensen.
Ook tante Anna Gigengack, weduwe en zuster van grootvader, woonde aan de Groenmarkt. Aan de Kromme Elleboogsteeg heeft oom Paul Gigengack (broer van grootvader) met zijn gezin gewoond. In de wandeling genoemd: Tante Marie uit het straatje.”

“Als we de kring wat groter maken dan is er de Smedestraat met het politiebureau en de brandweergarage. En de Pandpoort die vrij toegang gaf tot de tuinen van het Stadhuis met daaraan grenzend het zogeheten Prinsenhof. En niet te vergeten de Grote Markt met de tram ‘Loutje’ die nog niet verrold was en de klok aan het Stadhuis als veel gebruikt afspreekpunt.
Curieus waren de nieuwsborden van de krant op de hoek van de Grote Houtstraat. Met krijtjes beschreven werden de nieuwsborden voor het raam gehangen. Tenslotte de ‘paaltjes’ tussen de Vleeshal en de Grote Kerk.”

Het huis Nieuwe Groenmarkt 7
“Op nummer 7 was er, zoals bij ieder huis, een voordeur met een trekbel. De post en de krant werden onder de voordeur geschoven. Achter de voordeur een lange gang over de gehele lengte van het huis, met een tussendeur die uitliep in de keuken. In de keuken was een pomp en de gootsteen en een kraantje aan de muur voor het leidingwater. De electriciteit moest nog worden uitgevonden, de gaskousjes werden veelvuldig gebruikt. Verder waren er de voor- en achterkamer met als verbinding de alkoof en rechts en links de bedsteeën met de witte gordijntjes. Op de eerste verdieping waren twee vertrekken en dan nog de zolder.
Bij het huis hoorde ook Tommie de hond, die begon te blaffen als er gebeld werd. Opoe was nml. erg doof.
De familieleden hadden een loper (ook ik) waarmee zonder meer het huis binnen gegaan kon worden. Op de binnenplaats was de werkplaats van Opa, ook wel het ‘schuurtje’ genoemd.”

Het leven van alle dag
“Na schooltijd ging ik dagelijks om half vijf naar de Groenmarkt om de gerepareerde schoenen naar de klanten te brengen en de verdere boodschappen te doen. Om 6 uur aan tafel bij Opoe een boterham eten om vervolgens om half acht naar de schoenenwinkel van Huizing (Bally) in de Grote Houtstraat te gaan om te horen of er die dag nog reparatie was aangeboden. De winkels waren in die tijd tot 8 uur open, en zaterdags tot 10 uur. En dan naar huis om te slapen want de volgende dag moest ik weer vroeg op om naar school te gaan.
Opa was zijn tijd ver vooruit want op maandag werkte hij niet. Gewapend met de zwarte schoenenzak ging hij die dag lopend de klanten langs om te horen of er nog reparatie was.
In de schoolvakanties ging ik vaak met hem mee. Tot slot kreeg ik dan bij de Sierkan op de Zijlweg een ijsje met hagelslag (5 ct). Als beloning voor mijn werk kreeg ik iedere week een gulden, die in een busje van Buisman Koffiestroop in het dressoir bij Opoe werd bewaard. Als het bedrag toereikend was werden hiervoor schoenen of een pak gekocht, de zogenoemde drollenvanger. In de eigen knip werd wekelijks een dubbeltje (10 ct) gestopt. Ook kreeg ik van de klanten weleens een fooitje (5 ct).”

“Op 10 mei 1940 zette de tweede wereldoorlog abrupt een streep onder deze manier van leven.

Frans Gigengack speelde als saxofonist in de Amsterdamse popgroep Plastic People. Deze band was actief van 1967 tot 1974 en kwam voort uit andere bands, zoals The Blizzards, The Skelets, The Strangers, The Corvairs en The Crescents, allen uit Amsterdam. In feite bestond de groep derhalve 14 jaar (vanaf circa 1960; zie ook 'The Blizzards' in de Nederlandse Pop Encyclopedie). Plastic People maakte de meest stormachtige en ingrijpende ontwikkelingen in de popmuziek mee of, beter gezegd, was daar deel van. Plastic People was aanvankelijk een van de vele cover bands met de nadruk op de zo populaire soulmusic, artiesten als Joe Cocker en groepen als The Hollies. Later profileerde de band zich met eigen muziek, die het best kan worden omschreven als stevige maar lyrische pop, leunend tegen klassiek en jazz. De naam Plastic People werd ontleend aan het werk van Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention. In 2008 zal Plastic People een 'Reunion and Fundraising Tour' door alle provincies van Nederland maken.
